Kawashiri Residence & Landscape | Torrance, California
This complete transformation of a 1957 ranch style home was inspired by casual Hawaiian living. The goal was to capture the essence of this lifestyle through the details, materials and layout. Integral to the design, are the exterior spaces around the property. Ultimately, the Hawaiian theme integrates these exterior with their adjacent interior spaces; therefore, the design included the addition of a new front yard porch, a covered lanai at the heart of the home, and a private master bedroom courtyard retreat. Traditional detailing include green 7" siding and plaster, white painted board and batten siding, wood outriggers and matching white trim. Other materials include tradional hardwood decking stained to match the large front door which included glass side lights. At the base, the home showcases Mauka Pahoehoe field stone which is also used for landscape and seating walls. Additional accents of black are used in the new stamped concrete driveway and the roofing material. The interior improvements included the reorganization of the interior spaces and create a new master bedroom suite, office, mud room and laundry areas. The interiors are vaulted with exposed wood rafters and painted tounge and groove ceilings. Cabinetry, furnishings and other interior elements combine a contemporary tropical and tradional sense all while contributing to the overall Hawaiian feel of the home. Landscape elements frame the home and provide lush views to the exterior all while working together to emphasize the tropical theme.
